Multi-leg load planning for LTL & consolidation carriers

Go home at 4.

Upload tonight's manifest. Relay plans every pallet across every trailer and every hub — legal on every axle — and you approve it from your phone. The dock loads from the sheet in the morning.

No hardware. No integration. Runs beside the TMS you already have.

The problem

Your competitors leave at 4. You're still building loads at 7.

When freight changes trucks across hubs, every pallet is a decision across all of tonight's trailers — and that decision lives in one or two heads. You wait for the last inbound truck, work it out by hand, redo it when it doesn't fit, write the sheets, and nobody else can be trusted to do it. Packing is a third of it. The rest is waiting, trade-offs, rework and not being able to delegate.

What Relay does

Every tool a dock manager needs for the night, in one place.

Built for break-bulk and consolidation carriers running 20–100 trucks through two to six hubs. Here's the full set.

Planning

Phase 1
  • Solver places every pallet by size, weight, stop order, stackability, fragility, hazmat and axle limits — in seconds
  • 3D trailer view: orbit, step through stops, walk in at door height
  • 2D slot map; drag any pallet, instant red/green with the reason
  • Live axle gauges, center of gravity, tandem-slide control
  • Expected freight planned into reserved slots before it arrives

Deciding

Phase 1
  • Night board: tonight's trailers, fill bars, inbound ETAs, cut-off timers, exceptions, approve-all
  • Scenario compare: three trucks vs. four, hold vs. ship — cost, time and legality side by side
  • One-tap suggestions from the solver
  • Delegation rules: a dock lead approves inside your thresholds; you see only exceptions

Staging & dock

Phase 1
  • Manifest as a working document: every pallet's state from expected to loaded
  • Staging lanes drawn from your hub map, in load order; stage-to-slot on first touch
  • Split and rebuild pallets with full lineage
  • Fit check against what's physically on the dock before anyone lifts a pallet

Output

Phase 1
  • Dock sheet per trailer: QR, slot list, flags, axle weights, tandem setting
  • Pallet labels (QR + ID) on any office printer or Zebra
  • Driver compliance sheet: axle weights, leg manifest, hazmat placards
  • Printable load diagram and per-role quick sheets

Remote & notifications

Phase 1
  • Review queue on phone or laptop; pinned flags print on the dock sheet
  • Email, SMS and push for plans ready, approvals, mismatches, damage
  • No per-message fees

Compliance & evidence

Phase 1
  • Federal and state weight limits as hard constraints; hazmat segregation rules
  • Append-only chain of custody with timestamped photos
  • Claims packet and loss-run export (Phase 2)

Analytics

Phase 1–2
  • Trailer utilization by lane and hub; axle compliance record; hours saved vs. baseline
  • Dock time and idle, damage by leg, pricing leakage, hub dwell (Phase 2)

Dock scan app

Phase 2
  • Any phone: receive, scan-to-load with mismatch beep, door photo, seal, scan-off at the next hub
  • Securement calculation, palletization, distance-based door assignment

Training is built in: guided tours per role, contextual help, and downloadable guides generated from your own configuration — your hubs, your lanes.

How it works

Nothing to integrate. Nothing to migrate.

Export tonight's manifest

One CSV or Excel export from the TMS you already run. Relay learns your column layout once.

Relay plans. You approve from anywhere.

Every trailer, every leg, legal on every axle — before the last inbound truck arrives. Walk it in 3D, drag, flag, approve from your phone.

The dock loads from the sheet

Labels and a dock sheet per trailer print from the plan. Your crew stages to the slot and loads in order. Expected freight is already planned in.

The first 15 minutes

Bring last week's manifests — the loads you built by hand. We run them live and put your plan and Relay's side by side, with utilization and axle weights on each. Then shadow-run for 60–90 days at no cost.

Start the conversation

Relay is additive to your TMS, not a replacement. Dedicated scanners and label printers are optional upgrades; a phone camera and an office printer are enough to start.

Part of the BOIA family

Standalone by design. Better connected to BOIA Freight.

Relay runs on its own for any carrier. When a carrier also uses BOIA Freight, Relay tells the load board something no TMS can: exactly how much space is left on every trailer, per leg, with the fit already proven.

BOIA Relay

Plans tonight's trailers. Publishes residual capacity — open positions, cube, payload and axle headroom per leg — the moment a plan is approved.

BOIA Freight

Sees the open space on a lane, asks Relay "does this pallet fit?", and sells the space with confidence. Pallet status flows back for tracking.

Capacity you can sell

Not "half full" — three positions, 212 ft³, 4,200 lb, two stops.

Fit check before you say yes

A hypothetical pallet returns fits / doesn't, with the new axle numbers.

Open API for any TMS

Webhooks and API keys per integration. BOIA Freight is the first subscriber, not the only one.

Questions

Straight answers.

Do we need scanners or a label printer?

No. A phone camera reads QR codes and labels print on Avery sheets from any office printer. Dedicated scanners and a Zebra printer are an upgrade when volume justifies it.

Does Relay replace our TMS?

No. Relay plans and validates loads; your TMS keeps dispatch, billing and tracking. Relay reads one export from it and never writes back unless you connect it.

How does it handle freight that hasn't arrived yet?

Expected pallets are planned into reserved slots from the manifest. When one lands and measures differently, only its slot re-solves. Labels print before arrival; receiving tells the crew exactly which lane and position.

What if the solver's plan isn't how we'd do it?

Drag it. Every drop is validated live. Lock pallets in place and re-solve; the solver works around them. Your never-together rules and always-low rules are configured once so the plan looks like yours.

Does Relay do fleet management, GPS or hours of service?

No, deliberately. Relay tracks pallets, references trailers and names drivers. Telematics and your TMS connect as integrations, never as modules.

Where does our data live?

On AWS, isolated per customer with row-level security. Scan events and photos are append-only and retained for a minimum of three years, exportable on request.
